Return to Homepage

Alfred Percy Sinnett was born in England in 1840. He lost his father at the age of five. He had three sidters and one brother. His mother earned a living by writing articles for newspapers.

A  P Sinnett secured a position as an editor on the Allahabad Pioneer which was a leading Indian Newspaper. This brought him to India with his wife Patience Sinnett and his son Denny. Patience Sinnett went on to write “The Purpose of Theosophy

When  Colonel Olcott and H P Blavatsky arrived in India in 1879 they received a letter from Mr Sinnett enquiring about Theosophy for articles in his newspaper. Eventually they were invited by Mr Sinnett to his house in Simla and by the end of 1879 Mr and Mrs Sinnett had joined the Theosophical Society.

Mr Sinnett then came into contact with Master KH. Through this link a stream of teachings was sent to Mr Sinnett and Mr A O Hume in answer to questions by them. These teachings were presented in the book “The Occult World” published 1885. Extensive correspondence continued and the entire series of letters were published as “The Mahatma Letters to A P Sinnnett” in 1923.

Mr Sinnnett later left India and returned to England becoming an active member of the London Lodge

In 1908 his son Denny died of Tubercolosis and his wife Patience died of cancer. Mr Sinnett died in 1921 at the age of 81.
